World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures  offers the Master of Arts in Teaching in World Languages and Cultures and the Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in 6-12 Teacher Licensure. A minor is also offered at the graduate level. Students who would like to minor in world languages should determine the requirements in consultation with an advisor based on their major curriculum.

This degree is intended to prepare native and non-native speakers of world languages for careers in world language teaching. Language choices include French, German, or Spanish.

Admission Requirements


To be admitted to the Master of Arts in Teaching in World Languages and Cultures program, applicants must have earned at least 24 semester hours in a single world language. Students may complete up to 6 hours of these as undergraduate hours while concurrently enrolled in the graduate program. Native speakers must consult with the graduate director regarding this requirement.

Application Procedures


All application materials are to be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies.

Applicant must

  1. submit an application with the appropriate application fee (online at http://mtsu.edu/graduate/apply). Once this initial application has been accepted, the applicant will receive directions on how to enter the graduate portal to be able to submit other materials.
  2. submit two letters of reference;
  3. submit official transcripts of all previous college work.

Degree Requirements


The Master of Arts in Teaching in World Languages and Cultures requires completion of 30 semester hours.

Candidate must

  1. complete 30 semester hours including world language proficiency courses as listed below; no more than 30 percent of the total degree hours dual-listed as undergraduate/graduate hours can be counted toward the degree;
  2. complete common portfolio assignments in the required courses;
  3. achieve an oral proficiency level in the target language of at least “Advanced” and a written proficiency level of “Advanced High” on the ACTFL scale; students should consult the world languages graduate director for additional information on this requirement.

World Language Proficiency (15 hours)


  • Courses must be taken at the 5000 or 6000 level in French (FREN), German (GERM), or Spanish (SPAN) and selected in consultation with an advisor.

World Language Proficiency (12 hours)


  • Courses must be taken at the 5000 or 6000 level in French (FREN), German (GERM), or Spanish (SPAN) and selected in consultation with an advisor.

World Language Teaching (9 hours)


Graduate-level coursework from other departments may be used to fulfill this requirement with the approval of an advisor and the department.
