Admission Requirements

Admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching requires:

1. an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college;
2. at least a 2.75 undergraduate GPA or 3.0 GPA in the most recent 60 credit hours for full admission or a 2.50 undergraduate GPA for conditional admission;
3. a satisfactory score on the Praxis content area may be required if job-embedded.

All admitted candidates will be required to successfully complete the process for Admission to Teacher Education within the first semester. For more information, see education.mtsu.edu/admission/.

Application Procedures

All application materials are to be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies.

Applicant must

1. submit an application with the appropriate application fee (online at www.mtsu.edu/graduate/apply.php). Once this initial application has been accepted, the applicant will receive directions on how to enter the graduate portal to be able to submit other materials.
2. submit official transcripts of all previous college work;
3. submit evidence of at least one of the required admission items above.

Degree Requirements

The Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in English as a Second Language requires completion of 30-39 credit hours and successful completion of a clinical experience or an advisor approved alternative. Teacher licensure requires completion of all current Tennessee teacher licensure requirements for the licensure area.

For Licensure Non-Job-Embedded Candidates

All non-job-embedded candidates must enroll in and pass

• ELED 5510 - Clinical Practice-Elementary 9 credit hours OR
• YOED 5510 - Clinical Practice-Secondary 3 to 9 credit hours (9 credit hours required)

For Licensure Job-Embedded Candidates

Students take up to 3 credit hours with 1 credit hour per semester

• YOED 5000 - Job-Embedded Clinical Experiences and the Reflective Educator 1-3 credit hours
• EESE 5000 - Job-Embedded Clinical Experiences and the Reflective Educator 1-3 credit hours

Program Notes

Students taking courses for licensure renewal, add-on endorsements, or “plus 30” upgrade on teacher licensure should register as non-degree-seeking students, Students enrolling in 6000-level courses must hold a bachelor’s degree, and students enrolling in 7000-level courses must hold a master’s degree. Non-degree-seeking students cannot register for 7000-level courses without departmental permission.
