Piano Pedagogy Certificate

The certificate in Piano Pedagogy requires 17 to 20 credit hours.

Non-degree seeking students and students pursuing degrees in fields other than music must complete the required courses listed below. In addition, coursework (or demonstrated equivalent competency) in music theory, music history, and piano performance is required. An audition, interview, and placement exam determine whether additional coursework will be required. Competencies are as follows:

  • Piano Performance: Equal to passing the Upper Division Jury for Music Education/Music Industry (see audition information below)
  • Music Theory: Equal to passing Music Theory and Aural Skills II (MUTH 1120 )
  • Music History: Equal to passing Introduction to Music (MUS 1030 )

Following are the maximum number of remedial courses that may be required:

Piano Audition: The same as the Upper-division Jury requirement for Music Education/Music Industry. Details can be found in the Keyboard Area Student Handbook available online at www.mtsu.edu/music/keyboardstudies.php.
