Courses in the Department of History are designed to meet the general education needs of all students as well as to provide a solid foundation for those planning to pursue careers in history, law, journalism, business, and other fields.
The department offers a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Bachelor of Arts in History with a concentration in History 6-12 Teacher Licensure, a Bachelor of Science in History, and a Bachelor of Science in History with a concentration in History 6-12 Teacher Licensure. A concentration in Public History (B.A./B.S.) as well as a minor in History are also available.
The Department of History coordinates the interdisciplinary minors in Africana Studies; Media, History, and Culture; Environment and Human Society; Modern European Studies; and War, Policy, and Society. True Blue Core Requirements
All students seeking a degree from the University must complete 6 semester hours in the True Blue Core History and Civic Learning category. Students must select at least 3 hours from among HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , HIST 2030 , HIST 2040 , or HIST 2050 . Students may select the remaining three hours from among HIST 2015 , HIST 2025 , HIST 2035 , HIST 2045 , and HIST 2065 (Explorations in History and Civic Learning). Additional courses offered for the True Blue Core include HIST 1010 , HIST 1020 , HIST 1110 , HIST 1120 (Discovery in Creativity and Cultural Expression); and HIST 1015 and HIST 1115 (Explorations in Creativity and Cultural Expression).
Graduate Study
The department offers the Master of Arts in History and Doctor of Philosophy in Public History degrees. Requirements for these degrees and a list of the courses offered for graduate credit are published in the Graduate Catalog.
