Courses in the Department of Political and Global Affairs meet the needs of many students: those interested in public service, private business, or professional careers; those who wish to go to law school; those interested in international careers in in the public or private sector; and those interested in teaching in secondary schools. Our programs encourage students to develop skills in critical thinking, complex analysis, communications, and working across cultures that will prove helpful in these careers.

To accommodate these needs and interests within the objectives of liberal education, the department offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. Students may major in any of the following degree programs:

  1. a Political Science major (B.A. or B.S.) with either a
    1. general focus or
    2. Public Policy and Management concentration or
    3. Pre-Law concentration;
  2. an International Relations major (B.A. or B.S.);
  3. a Global Studies and Human Geography major (B.S.) with either a
       a. Global Studies concentration or
       b. Human Geography concentration or
       c. Teacher Licensure

Minors are offered in Political Science, Political Science Pre-Law, Political and Social Thought, International Relations, Public Policy and Management, and Political and Civic Engagement.

The Political Science major explores the political process and the institutions of government, both here and abroad. Students seeking employment in government or in public service agencies may choose to concentrate in Public Policy and Management while those exploring legal careers may concentrate in Pre-Law.

The International Relations major is for students interested in global politics, foreign policy, national security, development and human rights, and other issues that cross national boundaries.

The Global Studies and Human Geography major offers the tools to succeed in an increasingly globalized world. Students examine, analyze, and experience firsthand the connections between different peoples and places focusing in particular on the spatial aspects of issues, communities, and cultures.

All students at the University must fulfill the True Blue Core requirements. These courses are primarily in the fields of English, history, science, and mathematics. Students should study the requirements carefully and consult with their advisors on those courses.
