Courses in the Department of Political and Global Affairs meet the needs of many students: those interested in public service, private business, or professional careers; those who wish to go to law school; those interested in international relations and foreign service employment in the public or private sector; and those interested in teaching government and social studies in secondary schools.
To accommodate these needs and interests within the objectives of liberal education, the department offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. Students may major in any of the following degree programs:
- a Political Science major (B.A. or B.S.) with either a
- general focus or
- Public Policy and Management concentration or
- Pre-law concentration;
- an International Relations major (B.A. or B.S.).
Minors are offered in Political Science, Political Science Pre-Law, Political and Social Thought, International Relations, Public Policy and Management, and Political and Civic Engagement.
The B.S. in Global Studies and Human Geography at MTSU offers preparation and the tools to succeed in an increasingly globalized world. Students study global change and the movement of people and resources in the world, focusing in particular on the spatial aspects of issues, communities, and cultures. Global Studies and Human Geography students examine, analyze, and experience firsthand the connections between different peoples and places. They gain a deep understanding of the trends and phenomena shaping the world, and they develop skills in critical thinking and complex analysis, written and verbal communications, and how to work effectively across cultures.
Two concentrations are available–Global Studies and Human Geography. A Teacher Licensure program in Human Geography is also available. A certificate in United States Culture and Education is offered as well as minors in Cultural Geography, Geography, Global Studies, and Global Action and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
All students at the University must fulfill the True Blue Core requirements. These courses are primarily in the fields of English, history, science, and mathematics. Students should study the requirements carefully and consult with their advisors on those courses.
The department coordinates the interdisciplinary minors in African Studies, Urban Studies, Paralegal Studies, and Russian Studies. Interdisciplinary minors are open to all students at the University.
