Courses in the Department of History are designed to meet the General Education needs of all students as well as to provide a solid foundation for those planning to pursue careers in history, law, journalism, business, and other fields.

The department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (teaching) and a Bachelor of Science in History and a Bachelor of Science in History (teaching). The department also offers a minor in History and participates in the Africana Studies major.

The Department of History coordinates the interdisciplinary minors in African American Studies; Media, History, and Culture; Environment and Human Society; Medieval Studies; Twentieth-Century European Studies; American Culture; and War, Policy, and Security. General Education Requirements

All students seeking a degree from the University must complete 6 semester hours in General Education History, selected from HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , and HIST 2030 . Sophomore-level standing (or above) is recommended for HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , and HIST 2030 . For General Education Humanities and/or Fine Arts, one course of Western Civilization (HIST 1010 , HIST 1020 ) or of World Civilizations (HIST 1110 , HIST 1120 ) may be taken (see General Education ).

Graduate Study

The department offers a graduate certificate in museum management, the Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy in Public History degrees. Requirements for these degrees and a list of the courses offered for graduate credit are published in the Graduate Catalog.
