PHYS 3510 - Concepts in Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics3 credit hours Prerequisite: PHYS 3080 or PHYS 3110 . Introduction to the concepts of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Discusses the fundamentals of thermodynamics from both the macroscopic and microscopic points of view including entropy, enthalpy, heat engines, Helmholtz and Gibbs free energy, the partition function, and quantum statistics. Not intended to prepare students for graduate school in physics.
