PA 6840 - Clinical Rotation in Behavioral Health3 credit hours Prerequisites: Admission to the Physician Assistant Studies program; completion of the didactic phase of the PA program. Provides the PA student the ability to develop the skills necessary to evaluate and manage patients with a variety of emotional and psychiatric illnesses. Provide students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the role of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses in the care of the psychiatric patient. Students will learn the appropriate use of selected psychoactive pharmaceuticals. The student will learn and strengthen their deductive reasoning and clinical decision-making skills by developing a systematic, evidence-based approach to common behavioral medicine problems. There will be ample opportunity for the student to practice the skills necessary to perform psychiatric interviews, mental status examinations, and make referrals for specialized psychiatric treatment. Emphasis will be placed on developing clinical and communication skills, further strengthening students’ ability to gain insight into the psychosocial aspects of comprehensive patient care.
