HIST 4550 - Women in Modern Africa

3 credit hours
Prerequisite: Three hours of HIST 1010 , HIST 1020 ,  , or HIST 1120 . Examines African women’s social, political, and economic experiences from the rise of colonial rule in the late nineteenth century to the present. Topics include the rise of colonial rule and varied women’s responses to European overrule; changing understandings of marriage, inheritance, and women’s health issues in colonial and post-colonial Africa; the political role of women in decolonization and post-colonial Africa; and African women’s efforts for social and economic development since the end of formal colonial rule.
