  • HIST 4425 - Nationalism and Decolonization in Africa

    3 credit hours
    (Same as AST 4425 .) Prerequisites: HIST 1110  or HIST 1120 . Explores the various ways that African nations achieved sovereignty and the struggles they faced in creating a new state. Designed to show how the social and political movements took on different forms according to the types of colonial rule imposed upon these communities.

  • HIST 4435 - African Slave Trade

    3 credit hours
    (Same as AST 4435 .) Prerequisites: HIST 1110  or HIST 1120 . Focuses on the history of the African slave trade. Explores trans-Atlantic slave trade compared to other slaveries; historical significance and legacies of the slave trade; and the changing meaning of the term “slavery” and some modern forms of slavery that persist to this day.

  • HIST 4510 - Aztecs, Incas, and the Spanish Conquest

    Prerequisite: Three hours of HIST 1010 HIST 1020 HIST 1110 , or HIST 1120 . Examines the indigenous societies present before European colonization and the first encounters in Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America. Analyzes political structures imposed by the Spanish as well as the social and cultural implications of colonialism and miscegenation.

  • HIST 4550 - Women in Modern Africa

    3 credit hours
    Prerequisite:  or HIST 1120 . Examines African women’s social, political, and economic experiences from the rise of colonial rule in the late nineteenth century to the present. Topics include the rise of colonial rule and varied women’s responses to European overrule; changing understandings of marriage, inheritance, and women’s health issues in colonial and post-colonial Africa; the political role of women in decolonization and post-colonial Africa; and African women’s efforts for social and economic development since the end of formal colonial rule.

    Examines the political, social, and cultural developments reflected in Egyptian artistic, literary, and architectural works within the context of the 3000-year history of this ancient state from the Predynastic Period through the Ptolemaic Dynasty (3200-32 BCE).     Prerequisites:HIST 1010 , HIST 1020 , HIST 1110 , or HIST 1120 . Medical developments and the relationship between medicine and society. Examines two medical traditions: the West and China. Focus not only on major developments in medicine but also on the systems of healing in these cultures; compares roles medicine played within these societies. Also investigates impact of Western scientific medicine on various systems of traditional medicine.

  • HIST 4810 - History of Women in the Third World

    Prerequisite: Three hours of HIST 1010 , HIST 1020 HIST 1110 , or HIST 1120 . Connections between modern colonialism and development of third-world feminisms. Focuses first on conquest and colonialism and the consequences for third-world women. Focus moves to post-colonial societies and expands to include women’s political, economic, and social roles in the three regions of Africa, China, and Latin America.

    Prerequisites: Six hours of HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , or HIST 2030 . Investigates the full range of activities of professional historians, teaches skills of research and writing history, and prepares students to enter the professional job market or to seek further education.   • HIST 3011 - Teaching Historical Thinking

    3 credit hours
    Prerequisites: Six hours of HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , or HIST 2030 . Offers preparation for learning to think historically and developing that skill in middle and high school students and to people in public settings including planning, developing, and implementing lesson plans and assessing their results. Either HIST 3010  or HIST 3011 fulfills the History major requirement . Grade of C- or above is required.

    Prerequisites: Six hours of HIST 2010 , HIST 2020 , or HIST 2030 . In-depth field study of some aspect of MTSU or local community history through the use of oral history methods and historical research. Interview skills and public presentation of findings emphasized. Topics vary.

    3 to 6 credit hours
    (Same as AST 3075 .) Examines historical issues while participating in an educational abroad program. Experiential learning experience utilizes resources such as historical sites, museums, archaeological sites, and archives while abroad. Course is repeatable. Three to six credits may be applied to the History major as an elective. Three credits may be applied to the History minor as an elective.

  • HIST 4985 - Senior Seminar

    3 credit hours
    Prerequisites: HIST 3010/HIST 3011 and a minimum of 12 upper-division hours in history or permission of the undergraduate director. Capstone course for History majors. Students will conduct original research and produce a research paper, a pedagogical project, or a research-based creative project. Requires a formal oral presentation for completion of the course. May be taken for credit once.

  • HORS 2110 - Basic Horsemanship

    1 credit hour
    Preparation and orientation for students interested in taking horse science courses with an animal handling component. Topics include facility safety, horse control and handling, grooming, saddling, daily care considerations, and facility maintenance. Lecture and one two-hour laboratory each week.

  • HORS 2400 - Fundamentals of Horsemanship

    3 credit hours
    Behavior, philosophy, and language for communicating with and influencing the equine athlete. Develops basic control skills, balance and coordination, gaits; use of equipment; understanding equestrian competition. Two-hour lecture and two-hour laboratory each week.

    3 credit hours
    Familiarizes students with normal physiologic parameters and how to recognize and deal with health issues of horses. Topics include care of the pregnant broodmare, foal care, routine health maintenance, infectious diseases, commonly used medications, dentistry, lameness, neurological diseases, colic, parasites, ophthalmology, dermatology, reproduction, geriatrics, and alternative therapies.     3 credit hours
    Prerequisite: ABAS 2400  or HORS 2400  and approval of instructor. Understanding, recognizing, and producing lateral control in the horse. Lateral exercises; lateral movements; developing lateral balance and control, track, gait, pace, impulsion, and rhythm. Two hour lecture and two-hour laboratory each week.

  • HORS 3410 - Horse Breeds and Genetics

    3 credit hours
    A review of the history of the horse from the prehistoric era to present day with a focus on the development and contributions of horse breeds in the U.S. and state horse industry. Roles of breed associations, principles of genetics, selection of desired traits, genetic abnormalities associated with specific breeds, and matching breeds to disciplines discussed.

  • HORS 4440 - Equine Nutrition and Feeding

    3 credit hours
    Prerequisites: ANSC 1410  and CHEM 1010 /CHEM 1011  and CHEM 1020 /CHEM 1021  or approval of instructor. Equine digestion and utilization of nutrients, appropriate feeds and feeding management, and diseases with a nutritional component. Nutrient requirements for the horse at various stages, including maintenance, reproduction, growth, performance, age, and clinical support discussed.

    Preparation for students interested in competing in a variety of western horse show events such as trail, pleasure, reining, cowhorse, horsemanship and showmanship; understanding of rules, scoring, performing, and preparing for each event. Two hours of lecture and two hours of lab per week.

  • HORS 4540 - Equine Assisted Therapy

    3 credit hours
    Focuses on the effective modality of the horse/human bond as it relates to various forms of equine-assisted therapy with an emphasis on therapeutic riding for people with disabilities. Management of a NARHA-approved therapeutic program and instructor certification also covered. One hour classroom lecture, online, and experiential learning components.

    3 credit hours
    Prerequisite: HORS 4540  or approval of instructor. In-depth education for equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT), including business planning and administration, lesson planning and structure, and equine selection and management. Offers preparation for those seeking a career within EAAT services and organizations. Two one-hour lectures and one two-hour laboratory per week.

  • HORS 4550 - Equine Exercise Physiology

    3 credit hours
    Prerequisite: HORS 2400  or approval of instructor. Applied aspects of equine exercise physiology, including physical, physiological, metabolic and mental adaptation to athletic training, exercise metabolism, thermoregulation, biomechanics of movement, effects of surface and footing, common unsoundnesses observed during training and competition, exercising testing, and an overview of shoeing for performance.
